LEAD RESEARCHER
Dr Carsten Balzer
Ph.D., M.A. / Cultural Anthropology, Free University Berlin, wrote hir Ph.D. thesis on transgender movements in Brazil, Germany, and the United States. S_he carried out fieldwork in Tanzania and the Brazilian Amazon region, as well as in Rio de Janeiro, New York City, and Berlin, taught courses at the Free University Berlin, and has published a book and various articles in the U.S., Brazil, Germany, and Spain. S_he is a member of the steering committee of the international NGO Transgender Europe (TGEU), chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Transgender Network Berlin (TGNB) as well as a founding member of the TGNB, the Berlin organization TransInterQueer e.V. (TrIQ), and the academic online magazine Liminalis – Journal for Sex/Gender Emancipation and Resistance. Dr Balzer also initiated TGEU’s TvT research project.
RESEARCHER
Dr Jan Simon Hutta
Jan Simon Hutta received his PhD from the Geography Department of The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK. His doctoral project investigated LGBT politics of anti-violence and citizenship in Brazil. Before, he studied psychology and cultural studies at the Free University Berlin and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Apart from his involvement in TvT, he teaches at the department of European Ethnology at Humboldt University Berlin. His work has been published in several journals and edited volumes. He co-organised political and academic conferences and is a founding member of the interdisciplinary German-language journal sub\Urban - Zeitschrift für kritische Stadtforschung. He has been involved in queer activisms in Berlin and Brazil.
SUPERVISION
Dr Julia Ehrt
Julia Ehrt holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics of the Free University Berlin. She has been involved in international trans activism since 2005 and is one of the founders of TGEU. Currently she is the Vice Chair of the organization. She has supported and contributed to the TvT project from the beginning.
